A new year – a new job

2025-01-10

A new job is often on the list of New Year's resolutions alongside plans to exercise more, eat healthier and read more. We talked to Labas rytas, Lietuva about what it takes to make this plan a success.

You never get so many messages from managers about wanting to change jobs as after the New Year, says Laura Duksaite. A new job is often on the list of New Year’s resolutions alongside plans to exercise more, eat healthier and read more.

Audra Avižiūtė talked to Audra Avižiūtė on LRT Labas rytas, Lietuva about what it takes to make this plan a success.

According to Laura, there are two milestones in the year when you want to set goals and make changes:
– New Year
– September 1st.

There is a lot of interest in the first weeks of January. Many people contact me asking what I can do to find another job, another career opportunity.

And that takes work. It is important to define:
– what kind of new job we want;
– to take active steps ourselves, rather than waiting for the market to offer us a job;
– studies show that 30% of people who want to change jobs show interest in the first month of their job search;
– and if you don’t find a job within 3 months, enthusiasm drops dramatically, leaving only a 10th of the jobseekers actively looking for a new job.

If you are a manager, you should be aware that it may take six months or more to find the position you want. The executive market is smaller. There is more competition. And labour market expectations are higher and more specific. So it takes time to find the right stepping stone for your career.

Other positions take 2-4 months, depending on market activity, and it gets back on track in the second half of January. The selection procedure, the decision, still takes time. Both for meetings (often more than one stage) and to finalise commitments to the former employer.

The easiest way to progress in your career is to move to a company in a similar field: e.g. from a manufacturing company to a production company, etc. Changing fields will take more time. For more information, watch Labas rytas, Lietuva.

And if you’re also tempted to change your managerial job for another – send us a message.
